Funeral of the Sardine

Bringing carnival to a close, the pallbearers carry the sardine 'el chanquete' to its burial place - the ocean. Followed by its widows and other mourners, there is alternate wailing and weeping interspersed with spontaneous gleeful dancing - all making for a hilarious procession.

Because it was valentine's day, the 'corpse' was decorated with heart-shaped balloons.

This year we were invited to join in the wake.......
