Sharp's Folly

For the past few autumns we have been intending to go to Sikkim to trek to see Kanchenjunga but as our daughters kept deciding to have babies we put it off. This autumn was no exception, with #2 daughter due for a c-section in a few weeks. However Mr C has had a stressful summer with his mum being ill, then having the funeral to arrange etc, so we decided he should go without me, as I'll be needed here. Today I accompanied him on his first training walk to get fit for his Himalayan trek. "We" decided it would be helpful to his training if he carried everything! We did 10 miles from our house to walk through the village, up the valley and climb onto Simonside from the steep end, then walk home along the ridge. It was warm but misty. On the way out of the village we passed this folly, erected by the local minister for the relief of the unemployed stonemasons in the depression sometime during his tenure 1720-1758. It is the oldest folly in Northumberland.
