It's D Day for the Union

The next 24 hours will be ranked among the most significant in the history of Scotland - and of the United Kingdom.

As the Scottish nation decides whether to go it alone, the future of the 300-year-old Union is in the balance.

Last night both pro and anti independence movements issued final rallying calls to voters. Throughout the day we have seen very busy polling stations.

The Result
Yes 44.7% No 55.3%

Politicians have hailed the "incredible" turnout in the Scottish referendum after a campaign that energised voters across the country.

A total of 3,619,915 people voted Yes or No - a turnout of 84.5% in Scotland as a whole and a new record for any election held in the UK since the introduction of universal suffrage in 1918.

Now we will have to see if Westminster lives up to its promises.
