Achilles

This statute in the gardens of the Achilleion Palace overlooks the town of Corfu.

Erected by Kaiser Wilhelm II it originally carried the inscription " This here Achilles son of Peleas was erected by Wilhelm of the mighty Germans so that the next generations may remember him " but this was removed by the French forces garrisoning the island during WWI .

The Palace was built by the Empress Elisabeth of Austro-Hungary ( the unhappy , lonely, beautiful Sissi) and bought by the Kaiser in 1907 - a decade after Elisabeth was assassinated in Switzerland. Used and abused over many years, the restoration by the Greek Government to its present state has been successful and impressive.
