They laid him down

They laid him down,
that great frame
who has walked as tall as England itself,
now laid low on its hallowed turf.
Mouth aghast,
no words to pass,
we watched in silence,
in reverie and awe
as Mother Nature
reclaimed all.
I want it now,
your heart, your soul,
your words so clear
to guide me:
yet you are lost to me now,
and my furrowed brow
must seek to make sense of it all
without you
by my side.
