Who's in town?

..blown in by the hurricane?

Police boxes were traditionally painted blue throughout Britain apart from Glasgow where they were originally red until the late 1960s when they were repainted blue. In 1963 when Doctor Who began, hundreds of blue police phone boxes were scattered all over the UK. They served a very important purpose in the days before the Internet and smartphones. Inside these iconic blue boxes were actual telephones through which passers-by could alert the police if they saw something amiss on the streets of Britain that didn’t look quite right.

Doctor Who fans around the world have built refrigerators based on them, added a faux-front to their home that resembled them and even made their kids’ room so TARDIS life-like. While these are great tributes, they have nothing on the city of Glasgow where fans worldwide can see the real thing. This one is on Buchanan St. shopping precinct and others on Cathedral St., Wilson St. and Great Western Road. All four main Glasgow boxes are now Category B listed buildings. Other UK cities also have one, kept in a museum where you have to pay an entrance fee, but in Glasgow you can see them for free.

I kept the image of the Nat. West bank on the left of the blip as I like the adornment on the doors of the Victorian building.
