Ashes to Ashes

It's not a very good picture but serves to illustrate how a view has opened up after this Ash tree was cut down today. I spoke to the workmen.
Apparently the landowner had identified this tree right by the road to be potentially hazardous. During yesterday's storm he called out the tree surgeon who discovered a big crack in the tree, and in difficult and dangerous conditions cut the bulk of it down, to make it safe, as shown on CoffeePotter's blip yesterday. The responsible thing to do . They came back today to finish the job and tidy up so now all that is left is this stump and a glorious view over the fields. I saw it . It had a massive crack up the middle.
They almost certainly saved disruption from the tree falling, they might have saved lives, they might have saved mine.
So why today were they verbally abused for cutting down the tree, asked if they had permission, disbelieved when they said that it had cracked, asked what they thought they were doing etc etc.?
Last week in coincidentally almost the same spot, there were workmen trying to fix drainage problems. They too had to suffer insults from drivers furious because the road was shut. What is the matter with people?
The farmer has had most of the logs for fuel. Hence ashes to ashes.
