Playing Othello

Arvin and I went to the Bellingham Music Club this morning. Two excellent young musicians played for us. They were both juniors in high school and have music careers ahead of them I am sure. Afterwards there was a reception and then we headed home to be sure to be here when the piano tuner arrived.

Arvin took a rest and I did some business stuff. When he awoke we played two games of Othello. We've had this game for a very long time. I remember Ethan, son of my friend Linda whom I met when we both took childbirth classes together, playing this game when he was only four years old. He is a very smart fellow! So that means we have had the game since about 1975 or earlier. That's a long time.

Two people play. One is white. The other is black. You turn over your opponents pieces by putting one of your color down so that the opponent's tiles are between two of yours. The whole line turns and now they are your color. It sounds much more complex than it is. Today Arvin and I each won a game.

The piano tuner finally arrived so now I'm doing my blip while Arvin and the tuner work on our piano.

Helena had a momentous day today too. She went down to Bellingham to sign the lease of an apartment. She will be moving out gradually this month and in December. She has a family wedding to attend later this month in New Orleans so that will interrupt her move. It's an important time for her and a great move forward in her life. We are so happy for her and plan to help with the move and contribute some furniture as she didn't bring all her things from Boston. The apartment is small but nice. It is smack in the middle of downtown so she will be able to walk to all sorts of places including the central bus depot. We are so proud of her for finding the place and taking the initiative to do all she needed to to make it happen.
