The swing of the kilt......

Went out this morning to the Hororata Highland Games. Hororata is a small town about 40minutes to the West of Christchurch......

After the September 2010 earthquakes, the Hororata Community Trust was formed with the purpose to help rebuild and promote the wider community.
The Hororata Highland Games was established as the main fundraising focus for the Trust. The brief for the Games, was to establish a quality event, which offered all the traditional elements of Scottish Highland Games surrounded by a fun filled festival that engaged the community.
This unique event is best described as a traditional Scottish Highland Games with a Kiwi twist. The competitions are at the heart of the event and the Games are the only event in the South Island that offer all the traditional Scottish competitions.
The motivation behind the Games is not only to raise money; it is also to raise the profile of the area and its local businesses so the benefits are felt by the community throughout the year. In the first year (2011) the event brought the community together and gave people something positive to focus on while dealing with the aftermath of the Canterbury Earthquakes.
The past three events have been attended by 24,000 people and $90,000 raised (combined totals). The event also offers a fundraising platform for local community groups. Collectively community groups have raised $35,000 over the three events.

It is a fun family day.....with lots of photo opportunities.
