The Martyrs' Window

Stopping briefly in Melton Mowbray on our way home we discovered the gem that is St Mary's Church, C13 with some C12 remains, on a site previously occupied by Anglo-Saxon churches. The guide explained its unusual size and grandeur as being built by the Mowbray family in the expectation of its becoming the cathedral of the county town - except that Leicester became that city instead.

The martyr's window features the Oxford Martyrs (left to right) Bishops Nicholas Ridley, Thomas Cranmer and Hugh Latimer who died in the reign of Queen Mary, 1655/6. Hugh Latimer preached his last sermon in St Mary's: he was born in my home village.
