The Edge of the Wold

Crow country

Sometimes it's crows, sometimes it's jackdaws, ssometimes it's rooks, sometimes it's ravens. We see them all on top of the Helm, but today it was a solitary carrion crow that perched on one of the fence posts on the very top of the hill. This redundant old dilapidated fence line separates two areas of grassland that are both ungrazed. This side of the fence is short grass kept short by trampling by the large number of people who come up here every day, the other side of the fence is long and tussocky, and much less trodden. The wall that once separated the two sides of the hill has long since tumbled down in this topmost section, whereas elsewhere the Friends of the Lake District have repaired it to its former glory. I guess their ownership stops where the repaired wall ends.

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

Robert Frost, Mending Wall
