Some Wee Sma' Scottish Thingies

These bone and/or horn Scottish snuff mulls are personal treasures although of no great monetary value.

The smallest has the date 1726 on the top.

The one lower right has the inscription, "William Wishart, writer in Thurso," around the edge, the initials W.W. on top and a hand holding a quill pen on the front. Perhaps each time he took a pinch of snuff he liked to be reminded that he was, indeed, a writer. On the other hand, he may have been a writer to the signet -- a lawyer.

The black and white one is suffering from central heating.

The oval lid, which carries the excellent sentiment, "The Best is Not Too Good For You," is made of bone, wood and horn. There is no box for the lid.
