Snuggly Tree

It was bitterly cold today when we went for a walk. I forgot my hat and Nikonabike forgot his gloves, so we were very pleased when we arrived back at the car.

This tree is in the Bancroft Gardens, not far from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. It is called "The Remembering Tree" and is aid of a charity "Goodwill and Growth for Africa" (GAGA). Its coat is made up of about 1500 crocheted squares. Half were hand-made in the UK and the other half in South Africa, by women from poor communities.

Unfortunately it was vandalised last week and about 30 squares were ripped up and some were stolen., along with some baubles hanging on the tree. I wonder if they would have done this if they had met the individuals that are being helped by the charity?

The tree is extremely colourful in the bright sunshine, and is admired by tourists and locals alike.
