Retirement in Montana

Old Highway 2

Today, we took Dakota for his first walk on one of our hiking trails that we have around Troy. It is about 3 miles from our home and the view of the Kootenai River along the trail is breath taking.

Old Highway 2 was constructed by hand between 1912 and 1915.

This old highway was part of the Great Parks National Automobile Highway System. It provided access to Glacier National Park from Spokane and Seattle and linked this part of Montana with cities farther west.

The old Libby-Troy road was replaced in the 1930's by a wider, straighter paved highway in the valley bottom. Although portions of the earliest road now rest beneath the current highway, two intact sections have been preserved as foot trails. The section we were on is 2 1/2 miles long one way and has a trail going up to Shannon Lake which is about 1/2 mile up a steep mountain but well worth the climb. It also has a small waterfall that you can stop at and fill your water bottles.

It is a favorite place to take guests when they come to visit.
