Wednesday 31 March 2010: The knob mystery
Layla was standing next to a couple of ladies waiting to cross the road the other day, and overheard one say to the other that there's a special button underneath the 'push to cross' box thing which, when pushed, stopped the traffic immediately. Apparently she used it and it worked.
I had a look at my local crossing this morning and, lo-and-behold, there it was. I couldn't push it, but I could twiddle it and it didn't seem to make things happen any quicker.
Still intrigued, I tried the one on the opposite side of the same crossing on the way home, but this wouldn't budge at all.
I hate finding knobs I didn't know exist which do things I don't know about, so after extensive research I've finally found out. And every pedestrian crossing in the UK has one.
Can you guess what the secret knob's for? (No googling now!)
