Thursday 22 April 2010: Cardabela

The Carline thistle (Cardabela in Occitan, Cardabelle in French) is now a protected species where it grows wild in the garrigue here. It has become the symbol of the Larzac plateau and traditionally in many villages the flowers were nailed to doors as good luck charms.

This one in Faugères looks old and tattered enough to have been picked before the protected status was brought in.
