Saturday 24 April 2010: The glory that is F E Maughans
It's been a Whitley Bay institution for over 70 years.....and it's a proper shop. Where else would I find a wok hanging next to the haberdashery department or hairdryers rubbing shoulders with boxes of garden fungus fighter. There's a distinctive smell when you walk through the door, a heady mixture of creosote, engine oil and paraffin that's strangely comforting just because it's always smelt like that. Upstairs there's the rather more hardcore stuff, building supplies and the 'Trade Counter', everything from a plug for the kitchen sink to the sink itself. And here's a novelty, virtually nothing in bubble packs containing 10 more items than you actually need, you can pick and mix screws, nuts and bolts to your heart's content. So, if you're ever in Whitley Bay and find yourself in urgent need of a pot of paint or having a key cut, do drop in and sample the delights!
(ps.....they sell postcards too!)
Have a great Saturday people!
