Friday 23 April 2010: Birds and Bees and Beavers and Geese

Spring has come to the pond out back, and there has been plenty of activity to observe. The male Canada goose in the background has been guarding the female who is nesting out on the island, right next to the beaver lodge. The beaver couple come out of the lodge in the evenings and swim circles around the gander. We saw two giant snapping turtles engaging in what looked like a bit of water ballet right out of an Esther Williams movie. As I said to my husband, "I can't tell whether they're fighting or they're loving, but they're really going at it." Have been looking for tadpoles, but haven't found any. With some luck, we'll see goslings soon and maybe even a beaver kit or two.
