Saturday 1 May 2010: Castle Fraser
We drove up to Aberdeen today, to visit my brother and his family. To make use of our National Trust membership, we decided to go and see Castle Fraser.
Built between 1575 and 1636, it is an imposing sight as you approach it along a broad avenue, full of daffodils.
It has a real French Chateau feel, with lots of turrets. I particularly liked the feature of the "Laird's Lug" - a place for him to listen to what was being said below in the Reception Hall and a spy hole from one room to another. There was even a wooden leg on display, one of 18 owned by one of the Fraser family after being wounded in a battle in Spain.
A lovely evening spent catching up with the family, and admiring the new extension and major changes to their house over the last few months.
