The Casino, Marino -- A Postcard

The Casino in Marino is within short walking distance from where I live. It is one of the finest of the National Monuments of Ireland, but, to my shame. the last time I'd been there was when I was an architectural student, way back many, many (cough, cough) years ago. Thanks to Blip and the current Assignment, I went there this afternoon to have a look. It's magnificent!

I got there just in time to join a guided tour, which (thanks to Heritage Week was free, and) was excellent. After the tour I spent ages outside (photography inside is forbidden) snapping away. The general view is glorious, and there are several aspects of the perfect architecture which are totally satisfying, from the lions which guard each corner to the ornate details of the exterior cornices, but the best shot of the day happened when I placed the camera on its back on the surrounding paving and shot the underside of the richly carved soffice.

Thanks, Bilp, for opening my eyes to the wonders on my doorstep.
