Southern Necropolis - Vampire Hunt

Opened in 1840, the Southern Necropolis is the final resting place of over 250,000 individuals who have contributed to the rich historical legacy of Glasgow. Often referred to as the Gorbals 'City of the Dead'.

Many of the graves and headstones portray the merchants, traders, shipbuilders and architects who helped make the City world famous.

The main part of this picture features the castellated Norman style gatehouse built by Charles Wilson in 1848. I believe the structure is currently dangerous so be careful if, like me, you walk through it.

In 1954 it attracted attention from those interested in the world of vampires.
Hundreds of children gathered at the Gatehouse following rumours that two local children had been killed and eaten by a vampire with iron teeth. Vampire hunting became the pastime of the day. The story was eventually quashed and the blame for it was given to the horror films and popular American comics of the time, Tales From The Crypt, Astounding Stories etc.

I didn't see any vampires there this afternoon but they are quite common any Friday or Saturday night in Glasgow City Centre when the pubs and clubs come out.
