The Angus Inn

By angus_inn

Enjoyed a stunningly long lie this morning - slept until 10:30! We'll miss the long lies when the baby comes so taking advantage while we can. I taped the All Blacks game last night and watched it this morning - a satisfactory start indeed.

A wee bit rainy today so headed to the wonderful Te Papa museum. Didn't stay too long but managed to check out The Scots in New Zealand exhibition. It was small (wee, in fact) but interesting. This blip was of a piece of art from Rob McLeod called Foreign Climb about the difficulties of making yourself understood in a new environment. Rob moved to NZ from Glasgow in the early 1970s.

I learned today about Waipu which is small town in Northland that became a Scottish enclave when an enigmatic preacher the Reverend Norman McLeod arrived with his followers in 1853. The Waipu Highland Games has been taking place each year since 1871 - that's longer than the historic Open Golf Championship....

Amazingly about 50% of New Zealanders can claim Scottish Ancestry and if it wasn't for the large and regular influx of Scots migrants to New Zealand there'd be a few top players missing from the All Blacks squad - Richie McCaw, Luke McAllister, Leon MacDonald and Ali Williams for start......shame they're not playing for Scotland! Glad to be carrying on the tradition!!

Dinner's ready - woo hoo!

Cheers....
