Saturday 5 June 2010: Bunting mysteries

I don't know why a line of coloured flags should lift the spirits so much, but Stenton looked cheerful and summery, decked out in its gala week finery.

Ever wondered why bunting is called bunting? Apparently it's because bunting was traditionally made out of a material called ... bunting.

But according to my dictionary, the word bunting - the material - is "of unknown origin".

Phew. Glad I got that sorted out.
