Red-legged Insect

My first blip of an insect (except possibly for one or two in a bird's beak)! I had just taken shots of an picturesque but unused church in Hadley which I though might serve as a blip, when I saw this fellow close by.

I don't have a macro lens, so this will have to do. At first glimpse, I thought it was a small, colorful butterfly--but in fact it seems perhaps to be some kind of wasp? It was about 3/4 inch (2 cm) in length. Comments are welcome.
