Monday 24 September 2007: Rubbish?

Caution - photogeekery ahead...

I bought a new camera last week - Canon's latest offering, the Powershot G9.

It's had rave reviews and on paper looks like a stunning point-and-shoot. But, I have to say, I'm not too impressed thus far.

I wanted it because it saves in RAW format and the noise levels are reported to be excellent for this type of camera. (Well, that, and because I'm addicted to buying unnecessary camera equipment.)

For some reason, it doesn't seem to deal with highlights particularly well and skin tones are bit odd (although to be fair, Adobe have only provided 'unofficial' support for the camera in the latest Camera Raw plug-in). On the up side, it's got an incredible macro function (which I only discovered when I tried to focus with my finger over the lens and it focussed on my finger) and the wide f2.8 max. aperture delivers a lovely out-of-focusness.

I've a feeling that once we get used to each other, it's going to be either love or hate, becoming a much-loved lifelong companion or a new listing on eBay.

I shall persevere for another week or two.

Actually, I quite like this shot... hmmm....
