174/365: DIY-ing in the garden, August 2010
Woke up this morning at silly o'clock having a horrible nightmare and seriously loud tinnitus. Really a rubbish combination, I have to say. Kinda made for a sluggish start too so I was glad when everyone else fancied a quiet day at home. In fact, we barely got ourselves going by lunchtime. Maddy and Felix ended up having a bath which lasted for hours whilst I did some first class pootling in the kitchen making matar paneer for dinner and a lemon sponge cake for pud... then rubbed down the garden furniture ready for staining later. Nick got on with DIY-ing in order to finish our bathroom (still not finished, but recognisably a bathroom now - hooray!). And all the while the children bathed. And bathed. And bathed.
Now, a more responsible parent would have had them out of the bath pretty much as soon as they'd got the grubbiness off and had a little bit of play time... but the beauty of the 'children are happy and occupied and it means I can get on with some stuff I want to do' moment was too wonderful to resist. Not sure who enjoyed the bath more. Them, because they got to play for ages? Or me, because I got some peace and quiet? That makes me sound like a bad parent, huh? But I am guilt free and have a happy curry scoffed tum to boot.
This afternoon, I tempted fate good and proper by staining the garden furniture and then watched a play our two had come up with before making some lemon curd. Anyway, their play weirdly involved princesses, princes, a teddy bear who was a female 'baby Jesus', feigned death, lots of running about (Felix's speciality) and culminated in a collision which left Maddy with a wobbly tooth and tear-stained face. I'm waiting to be contacted by an agent as I sit here typing this... ;o)
Oh, and then. It rained.
Heavily.
Because someone somewhere knew that my furniture needed to dry.
*weeps into tea*
PS I really hate this shot. But I really hated all the other shots I took today more. So this one wins by default. Ta da!
PPS Turns out the one I originally posted was even more hated than this one - which I still hate.
PPPS The PS's are back.
PPPPS And they're breeding.
