Oyster catchers playing in the swell

Its been a long wet day, I had a much needed day off and intended having lunch with friends and a walk - we only made it to the pub and stayed there all afternoon chatting rather than walking - all of us were driving so not a jot of alcohol passed our lips - bet the landlord loved us!

Its Friday and Diarmuid and I always go to the sea at end of the day - this time to Steamer point. During WWII, the western end of what is now Steamer Point Nature Reserve was acquired by the MOD and became a secret development site for Radar and signals intelligence. The establishment that was built on this area was known as SRDE (Signals Research and Development Establishment) This establishment, under great secrecy, developed the UK's first satellite based communications system, mainly for communications between the UK and Warships at sea. Apparently one of the most memorable features of theis site was the large white golf ball shaped inflatable dome which sheltered a large satellite communications dish until the mid 70's. This was before we came her and today all that is left of this establishment is the base for this dome (along with the bases for two other smaller domes) and a number of block houses and sentry posts.

Visibility was poor this evening but there were a group of oystercatchers near the shore who took flight every time the waves crashed then landed again until the next one got them. I love these very common birds with their bright orange legs and eyes; in flight they have a striking black and white pattern on their wings - one day I will catch a shot which shows it but I think I need a better camera...but for now my compact does OK

End of the day - we are away tomorrow so must pack and off to bed!
