OXO

OXOs History

1840 - 1899

Professor Liebig invented an extract of beef to make the goodness of meat affordable to the poor. Many doctors saw it as an aid to health and strength and it received praise from Florence Nightingale.

1900
The OXO name was born.

1908
OXO was the official caterer of the London Olympics supplying an OXO drink to runners.


1910
The first OXO cubes went into production making the product more accessible and desirable.

1914 - 1918

(WW1) The OXO cube was included in the emergency rations for troops in WW1.

1930s - 40s

OXO focused on the cube's goodness and value for money at a time when Britain was struggling financially. Food became more comforting and flavoursome by adding OXO.

1958

'Katie' featured in OXO adverts for the next eighteen years.

1960s


The hugely popular OXO 'Book of Meat Cookery' was launched and outsold Mrs Beeton.
To coincide with OXO's Golden Jubilee, 'Golden OXO' later named 'Chicken OXO' was launched.

1983 - 1999

Introduction of Lynda Bellingham and the OXO family TV ads.
