A Gardening Project

My wife is a regular alumni contributor to Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and as such we were invited to the "dedication festivities" for the college's new Center for the Environment.

Today a number of environmental interns spoke about their projects. This student teamed with another this summer to plant an entire vegetable garden on the campus; they began from scratch, planting 1/6 acre, selling most of their produce to the college's dining service (at market prices). Here the talk is about the pests they dealt with--above all rabbits, against which they put up vials of fox urine! (as shown in this slide).

Other student presentations analyzed a proposed dam in Brazil (which will have a horrific environmental impact), and mercury in the Savannah River in the southeastern U.S. (a fascinating multi-year project).
