Thursday 2 December 2010: Spur winged plover
Spur-winged Plover, Vanellus miles novaehollandiae, East Coast, South Island, New Zealand. Also known as masked plovers or masked lapwings were self introduced from Australia in the 1930's,
They are now widely spread, They make a harsh noisy cry (sometimes they are called noisy Australians!) , and are often seen being harassed by or harassing harrier hawks.
They have a claw on the wings hence the name.
they eat insects and worms and are very adaptable as to habitat.
