Sunday 12 December 2010: Long-tailed and cold!
This is a long-tailed tit, as I'm sure that many people know (especially those who subscribe). But how small is it, I mean if you as anyone they might give you a measurement in cm, or comparison, maybe similar size to a wagtail, or a sparrow. But the thing is they're not. both the pied wagtail and the House sparrow can weigh up to three times as much as a Long-tailed tit. The main reason I point this out is that these birds really suffer in the cold, they need to eat a lot to keep warm, please put food out.
And how much does a long-tailed tit weigh? 9grams, and to give that some context, a £1 coin weighs 10grams.
Good birding day today, other birds included Water Rail, Long-eared Owl, plenty of smalller passerines (Siskin, redpoll etc).
