Abandoned building 6: the grain warehouse

An unbelievably shite day - very very cold, dark and lashing with rain. Too wet to be prancing around the countryside so this was the only shot risked before fear of getting my camera wet. This large and imposing ruin lies on the banks of the estuary going into Durrus. Nobody seems to know much about it but it seems to be 18C, and was originally a grain warehouse - I seem to remember the grain was going to and from Liverpool. There were several mills in Durrus so maybe that had something to do with it. During the 1840s it had become obsolete and was reputedly used, rather grimly, as a workhouse for children orphaned during the Famine.  After that I suspect it was just allowed to decay.  You can see the remains of a quay to the right but it's very hard to get to on foot and the ivy has taken a firm hold.  Now it's just the domain of birds and cattle.

Had my hair done this afternoon - looks a bit bouffant :(
