Friday 14 January 2011: Home for the Weekend
I'm home! Tony is busy on the Shepherd's Pie after delivering a welcome cup of tea. He's spent the day working on maps and courses for an orienteering event he is controlling at Brimham Rocks next month.
The news on the tv is full of the natural tragedies which are the floods in New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Brazil. A father is interviewed about his having to decide who should be rescued first in his family from the roof of their shifting house when only two of them can swim: his wife, his disabled stepdaughter or his other child. Another father describes the moment his vehicle overturned and his wife and two children were swept away. He weeps as he faces the camera and simply says that if it hadn't been for his son, caught in a tree, he would have let the waters take him. A sombre start for the weekend.
