Dark Satanic Mills

Another disappointing, rainy, windy, dreich day in Shipley and a wet puddly walk along the Leeds Liverpool canal to Saltaire on my blip hunt before catching the train home.

The monstrous mill buildings along the banks gave an atmospheric air to the place with the rain, and had me imagining the scene when they were functioning with the mill workers trudging in to do a hard days work.

Saltaire village with its hospital and alms houses was built by Sir Titus Salt for his mill workers. It has been carefully preserved and the mill houses though small are relatively expensive for the area and much sought after. The street names are those of his wife and children

The actual Mill has been converted into spacious galleries selling all manner of things and with a popular restaurant incorporated- the Salt Diner.

As we headed north towards Edinburgh, the weather gradually improved and we had an interesting sunset with the sun appearing and disappearing in clouds fringed in bright light over the Pentland Hills.
