Tuesday 18 January 2011: Old Islamic Cairo

Today we walked all over the old Cairo- Coptic, Greek and Jewish churches. Then the old southern gate being restored now dating from about 1090. Great views- Walked through the old Islamic section that Naguib Mafouz made famous with his palace trilogy. So chose this typical photo from there. I will figure out a way to post some better photos from my "real camera" after we're home.
A note about security- we travel with a guard on the bus, a dog sniffs it when returns to the hotel, and there are metal detectors everywhere.
Tomorrow we fly south to Abu Simbel and lake Nasser. Not sure about the Internet there. We are getting a wake up call at 1:45! Eek!
Btw, Aida last night was a fun"cultural experience" - Aida herself was the worst I've ever heard, but the music was Ok, and the sparkly costumes and sets were outstanding! Not world class. No one bothers to review it. Was wonderful after our day at the pyramids tho.
Ok-off to bed. :-)
