Behold my wee man turning his hand to draughts. Inspired by his current passion for all things Harry Potter, the boy had insisted on playing wizard chess earlier on this afternoon. He was remarkably attentive and, by the end of the first game, had a pretty good understanding of what all the pieces could do.

We then moved on to draughts via a brief flirtation with backgammon (which I'm a bit unsure of myself...). A thoroughly old-fashioned afternoon of family fun - obviously punctuated with frequent 'can i go and watch TV?' requests but pretty low on the whinging scale all the same.

And before you think we're a bit holier-than-thou on the kids and TV front, the same time last Sunday the boy was being taught the value of 'sticking it to the man!' via 'School of Rock'.

We are a broad church.
