Up Helly A

On the last tuesday of January come rain or come shine Lerwick celebrates Up Helly A which is supposed to signify the start of the end of winter. The ceremonies start at 8.30 in the morning and finish around 24 hours later. The main part of the day is the torchlit procession and the burning of the galley.
