The Untrained Eye

Disaster

Some days you can't find a blip to save your life. And other days you are inundated by images. Today was such a day!

Why, you therefore are entitled to ask, as he published this faded and out of focus image?

I went into the Maritime Museum in Wellington, New Zealand, today, and part way round sat through one of the most moving film presentations I can remember. It recorded the sinking of the Wahine, a ferry which ran between Lyttleton and Wellington . It went down in heavy seas in 1968 and all within sight of the Wellington harbour shore with the loss of 51 lives and over several hours.

Footage came from various sources and included interviews with survivors and images of the dead.

This clip, from part of the film, shows the moment when water comes over the deck and the end of hope for the ship and all within view of the beach.

I am on a cruise.......
