Saturday 29 January 2011: Winter Birch

A bright day with chilly undertones. It was great to feel the warmth of the sun on my face, but there was was plenty of frozen water around.

I can't believe it's been three weeks since I last managed a quick dash onto the moor, other than my walks to and fro from the train and bus. I went up to one of my favourite groups of trees, where I found plenty of goldfinches about, I counted 22 in this tree and its neighbour. Hopefully a few will appear as usual in the garden when I do the Big Garden Birdwatch tomorrow.

The sun was bringing out the rich colours, with brown still dominating, but there were signs that the buds are progressing and there were a few shoots of Yellow Flag in the bogs.

bright winter day ~ on the moor ~ rich colours ~ grass trees sky ~ swaying together

Update: added a couple of Goldfinch shots from the same time (next tree along) here and here.
