Tuesday 1 February 2011: Christchurch

I walk past this church every evening to collect Bob from after school club. The lighting always makes it look slightly spooky and it reminds me of when I was a child and I had to go to bell ringing practice. It used to completely 'scare the willies out of me'.

We lived in a nice village in Oxfordshire with a beautiful church that in the daylight was lovely and not at all forbidding. But come night time.... Well I used to approach with fear. I went through the gate and would then leg it as fast as I could under the yew trees desperately hoping that no mass murderer or floating grey lady was after me. It wasn't much better when you got to the door as it was huge, ancient and very heavy. All the time there would be just one or two bells ringing, not a merry peal, but a slow and forbidding ring.........

I had to do it, my mum was the tower captain. I never excelled at it though as it required remembering patterns of numbers, and well, me and numbers.... we don't really get on all that well. My older sister was much better.

On another note the vicar of this particular church came and preached at our church a while ago and it was a really good sermon. I do miss C of E sometimes. If you're interested you can get it here I'll point my folks in his direction next time they come and stay.

Proverbs for today (couldn't choose)
v13 A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit
v4 The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit

hadn't realised when I chose those two but there's a bit of spirit crushing going on in this chapter!
