Friday 4 February 2011: Of sun & song

I don't ask for the meaning of the song of a bird or the rising of the sun on a misty morning. There they are, and they are beautiful.

Pete Hamill

It was 3 degrees F,-16 degrees C, when I ventured outside this morning after dropping T off at the train. This wren was high in the bush singing in the morning sunshine with the most beautiful song, you'll just have to imagine it and imagine my fingers getting colder and colder in my gloves. The snow is deep and frozen, corn snow I think we used to call it when I cross-country skied in my younger days before knee troubles. It's sunny today with a rain/snow storm predicted for tomorrow afternoon, blech.

Roof collapses are the newest danger in the area, the weight of this heavy wet frozen snow is really dangerous on flat surfaces. At least 70 collapses were reported as of Thursday. A local school where my nephew graduated from some years ago was safely evacuated before noon yesterday. Scores of traffic accidents, ice, snow ruts and the inability to see around the mountains of snow make all the corners a real challenge. I'm not looking forward to my 30 minute drive to and from the painting studio today.
