Saturday 5 February 2011: Books!

This is the story of another independent shop that is having some success in Wilmington, North Carolina. Yes, we have moved from peppered pickles to old books.

A retired man with an extensive book collection opened a used book shop on Front Street. The shop that began as a hobby, grew quickly. When the guy grew well into his 80's, he decided to sell his business. A younger woman bought the shop and did a super job of re-organizing it. Then the building that the shop was located in was condemned and was forced to move.

With the help of friends, she located a larger space just down the street. It took months for her to have the store readied for the thousands of books that had to be moved within a day. She couldn't afford to pay to have the books moved, so she solicited help from any and all who would be willing. A contingent of store owners and residents helped her make the move, just in time. The store is doing well, she now sells baked goods along with the books. Additional events and activities are also taking place here.
