Saturday 12 February 2011: A study in scarlet
On the right, the scarlet elf cup (Sarcoscypha coccinea), a common fungus in damp woodland at this time of year, to be found growing on soggy fallen timber - in this case a mossy log in a stream.
On the left, the scarlet-coated terrier (Canis iacrussellensis var. rubens), again, not uncommon in this area although the green-coated version is also seen (Canis iacrussellensis var. viridis)
[Another picture of elf cups here.]
