Saturday 12 February 2011: Mineral

When i got a few minutes to spare today, I thought it would be useful to get some more mineral shots. This one is Quartz and iridescent specularite on hematite from the, now closed, Florence Mine in West Cumbria. This is a mine which served the steel industry in Workington for many years in my childhood, the hematite being 70% iron.

Whenever I went down any of the old mines I had to remember to wear very old clothes as the red stain from iron-ore never comes out. That's why latterly much of it was sent to Germany for the paint industry.

So, tomorrow is Sunday, and I have a day off! Here's hoping for a good day.
