Memorial to Charles II, Duke of Brunswick in Genev

On the promenade opposite the Spout in Geneva, is this ornate Memorial to Charels II of Brunswick. Son of the Black Duke, who lead the Black Brunswickers and was killed at Quatre Bras before Waterloo in 1815.

Charles succeeded his father as a minor, under the guardianship of George, the Prince Regent of the UK and Hanover.

His administration was corrupt and in 1830 when the July Revolution broke out, he fled home from Paris to Brunswick. He was attacked by the populace and his palace was destroyed by fire.

His brother William turned up and was received by the people with acclaim. Charles tried to reclaim his duchy but failed to get any support. He spent the rest of his life in Paris and London, and then Geneva, when he died in 1873, leaving his wealth to the CIty.
