The demolition begins

The McEwans brewery has been under scaffolding for weeks now but this is the first visible sign I've seen of the destruction that I'm sure will take months to complete. The store houses on the other side of Viewforth are already mostly gone. It's pretty strange being able to see clear across to Cineworld from the bridge!

When the plant closed at the end of 2004, it had only been open 31 years. Seems like an incredibly short lifespan for such a massive hunk of metal building, considering how old most everything else in Edinburgh is. Sad really. It will be interesting to see how the canal changes over the next 5 - 10 years though. Should make for some interesting walks to town.

A quick google produced some pretty interesting photos someone was able to take of the inside of the derelict building. Napoleon had said the same thing many times when we were walking passed it on the way home: "I wish I could take my camera in there and get some pictures before it's knocked down". Well, he never managed it but this guy did.
