Friday 18 February 2011: Romans They Go The House
There's a lot of Roman remains around here - the theatre in Mainz, a bit of a wall here (not at all impressive to look at now) and just out of town there's part of the Limes Germanicus.
Apparently if you do a bit of digging around the area where today's Blip was taken, you can still find bits of pottery and such like. That might be slightly more enjoyable on a more clement day. Today felt exactly like it looks. Still, this place was interesting - it has the remains of an old amphitheatre where they reckon they had those Gladiator fights. It's quite something to imagine how it must have looked then.
So, today's Blip is a reconstruction of what they think these fortifications looked like. Pity the poor souls who had to sit out here through winter. They'd have a word to say to the bloke who invented the sandals I expect.
