Monday 21 February 2011: Male Red Breasted Merganser

My son told me that he had seen a pair of these ducks a couple of weeks ago and I have been keeping my eye out for them. Today I did the Mall walk up the Thurso river and when I was nearly at the new bridge I spotted this single male floating down on the current. Just got one shot of him before he flew off - I got too bold and moved quickly to the edge of the river bank and he took fright!

Weather a little improved and patches of blue sky were spotted but still very sharp cold wind even if it has swung round to the south.
