When did fairy cakes become cupcakes?

Lots of baking today. However, I was too eager to get these cakes in the oven - the temperature was too high and they ended up rising higher one side than the other. So, I made them into fairy cakes. When did our fairy cakes become cupcakes I wonder?

These are lemon flavoured, with lemon butter icing.
