The Edge of the Wold

Canada morning

Kent Estuary, Cumbria

Getting up at 4 am feels quite punishing, but then the reward for the effort makes you wonder why you don't do it more often. After all, the milkman is up and about every day at that time. I saw him this morning heading back to the farm at 0430 to restock.

The morning light was sublime, the pale pastel colours are only seen at this time of day and there is an other-wordly quality to the landscape. The air was perfectly still and the waters of the Kent estuary were a mirror for the milky sky. Wispy mists were hanging over the low-lying ground. As I returned to this spot for the second time, this file of Canada geese were floating downstream, while a pair of shelducks were paddling up.

The view is across the estuary to the limestone hill of Whitbarrow, and beyond to the fells of the Lake District.

I went home at 6 to catch up with another couple of hours sleep.

It's times like this that we live for.

Definitely worth viewing large.
